Why Boudoir Photography?

Sometimes I find it hard to put into words why  we chose to narrow down and chose  boudoir photography niche. To me, it is so much more than photos. It’s about self-acceptance, body positivity, and art. It is about getting glammed up and laughing your butt off. It’s about the transformation that takes place between the time you walk in my studio and walk back out that door. It is about feeling beautiful, and that is something I believe every person deserves.

I started photographing boudoir photography because I saw the beauty in everyone that came in our door. I believed I could show any person what I see through my camera. Women tell me they feel they can’t look “that beautiful” because they feel too tall, weigh too much, or have too many stretch marks. I loved showing them the photos from their session and showing that they CAN, in fact, feel beautiful.  Seeing their reactions to their pictures changed me. From that moment on, I knew I had found my passion.

It was now my job to be a mirror for my clients. Not the mirror that the world shows you that shames you, but the one who sees past all of the lumps, bruises, and imperfections. The one that shows you your sparkle.

The Transformation

The transformation that takes  place in our studio is the best part of the whole experience for us. When a woman arrives to our studio, most of the time she’s nervous, sometimes even visibly nervous. Shaky hands and voices, sweaty hands and faces are things I see all the time. Once they sit in the chair to get their hair and makeup done, the transformation begins. The client slowly starts to shed those signs and feelings of nervousness and anxiousness.

Then the  photo session would start. The first  few minutes is to get you all warmed up. When once in a while we  show the client the back of the camera after the first series, we usually hear “OH MY GOD, that’s me? NO WAY that’s me!” We sure love to preserve the best for last as far as revealing our images on the TV screen so we love to build suspense and anticipation for the viewing.

As we go into the next series and then the next, the laughter and smiles start to come out. Then she starts to feel sexy. The sexy eyes come out. And you can tell that it’s starting to click with her.

By the time we finish the session and go into the reveal, we’re friends. We’ve just shared an experience that they will always remember. We’ve laughed and shared stories about our lives.

Once we show our clients their portraits  on the TV screen, their jaws drop. They see themselves like they never have before. This is one of the amazing things about boudoir photography. I get a chance to show them how I see them, how their spouses see them and be their mirror. When they walk out that door, they’re smiling so big and they can’t wait to tell all their friends about what they just did.

A Little Piece of My Story

I was in a very dark place once. People ask me to share my story about how I got into photography, most likely  thinking that my response would be what  99.9% of other photographers would say, which is, “Oh,  I have had love for Photography since I was a child and I was taking pictures since then.” This is not one of those stories.

My story is about losing someone I never got a chance to really meet – my first son. Ironically, I can actually say I have given my firstborn for this, and I would not even lie. I wrote the entire story for you here to read. Below are some snippets from the post.

This entire event symbolizes the death period of my life. The memory of this serves me as a symbol that I have been dead and I needed to wake up.  That was the lowest point of my life. I could simply not fall any lower. And from the ashes I learned how to grow. 2012 was supposed to be the end of the world. Well, the irony is, it was the end of my world as I knew it.

I wanted to be pregnant again and was actively trying again.  I  was  hired for a second job,  inspired by just one thought of being able to save up enough money  over summer, so I could buy my first DSLR camera to take photos of my new baby one he arrives.

Soon after that I got pregnant with my second son Alexi,   bought my first camera and fulfilled  such a deeper dream of having  his newborn photos done with props, blankets, buckets and backgrounds  like a professional newborn photographer would. I started documenting every day of his life. It has also opened up to a possibility of  photographing other families as well. I put an ad on Craigslist and that has started my photographer career back in 2013.

The chain of  events that has led me to this, has got me thinking. I started to think about the photos I was in, and how my son would be able to look back and remember me if I wasn’t around anymore. Would I want him to remember me being ashamed of my body and hiding from the camera? Nope. Would I want him to not have any photos of me at all? Absolutely not!

Now I have trained me and my team that boudoir photography is a celebration of your body and who you truly are. We take pride in being able to help show women how to celebrate their bodies, their battles and their victories they’ve been through. Let us show you your sparkle. Let us help remind you how to love and be proud of yourself.
